THE STARMAN SHOW : LEARN TO THINK CREATIVELY

Language/Arts and Music/Arts Curriculum

Targets: Creative Writing, Creative Thinking through songwriting

Grade Levels: K-8

Goal: To teach students how to think creatively through the use of interactive excercises that will result in

the lyric writing of a complete song

Starman is a "star" musical performer in full show costume who sings and performs a collection of original songs to the

audience through the use of live voice, guitar and backing tracks. After playing 3-4 original songs, Starman talks to the

audience about how songs are constructed in an easy A-B-C format, and how the creative process works. Emphasizes that

creative thinking is within reach of anyone, and then teaches the audience the process of creative "ballooning" by having

students write down key idea words into ovals or "balloons" on their pads. Each student is encouraged and guided through

the creation of his/her own song, and one will be anonymously selected and actually set to music on the spot and performed

live by Starman. Kids are also encouraged to enter their songs in the online "Starman Songwriting Contest," to compete for a

Sony CD Player and educational creative thinking computer software. (40 Minutes - SINGLE $600/DOUBLE $800)

HARMONY: AN EVERLY BROTHERS TRIBUTE

Music/Arts And Music/ Arts Curriculum

Targets: Music Appreciation, Music History

Grade Levels: K-8

Goal: To teach students the theory of harmony through the songs of The Everly Brothers.

This program recreates an actual Everly Brothers concert, with popular local Everly Brothers Tribute Artists Mark Curran

and Thomas Haney. After performing a medley of Everly Brothers music, Mark and Tom alternately address the kids and tell

the story of Don and Phil Everly, two men who changed the face of pop-music in the fifties, and how they influenced today's

popular music. Mark and Tom demonstrate the theory and function of harmony in music, and sing examples. Mark and Tom

teach this harmony in action by dividing the audience into two parts, and teach the children how to sing in "perfect harmony."

To end their concert, they invite several children from the audience to come up on stage an help them sing the song they have

just learned along with the audience. (40 Minutes - SINGLE $600/DOUBLE $800)

ELVIS: A SUBSTANCE ABUSE TRAGEDY

Health/Arts And Music/ Substance Abuse Curriculum

Targets: Substance Abuse

Grade Levels: K-8

Goal: To teach students about the tragic consequences of substance abuse, with a special emphasis on the dangers of abusing

legal prescription drugs, an often overlooked area of substance abuse.Also briefly addresses how Elvis's music transcended

racial barriers and helped rhythm and blues become accepted by mainstream audiences.

This program features an authentic re-creation of a real life Elvis Concert, with Elvis Tribute Artist Mark W. Curran

performing a medley of Elvis hits in full Elvis costume. After performing for a fast paced six minute medley, Mark introduces

himself as himself and tells the audience the story of the life and music of Elvis, and the substance abuse that caused his

downfall. Audience participation is encouraged, as students are asked to raise their hands and cite the names of dangrous

drugs they have heard about, and Mark will introduce them to common prescription drugs that will often be prescribed by

doctors for the use of pain killers and sedatives. (40 Minutes - SINGLE $600/DOUBLE $800)

Our programs are designed to meet criteria standards for Music as as set forth by the CSBE from the

following abstracts:

2307 MUSIC APPRECIATION/HISTORY/LITERATURE

A class with major emphasis on listening activities related to the structure or design of the music from perceptual, creative,

historical and critical viewpoints using a variety of musical forms and styles.

2308 MUSIC THEORY

A class that concentrates upon the theoretical aspects of music such as symbols, intervals, scale and chord structure,

duration,

meter, pitch, harmony, etc. Classes such as "Harmony, Theory, and Styles" belong in this category and not in Music History if

the largest proportion of study is theoretical, rather than historical.

2309 COMPOSITION/SONGWRITING

A class for students who wish to express themselves through creation of music. It may or may not have a prerequisite of

music

theory and/or ability to play a melodic instrument; it may use either non-conventional or conventional notation; it may include

harmonization in addition to melody writing; it may use computers for creating music.

2313 SWING/SHOW CHOIR

A selected vocal ensemble that performs popular or jazz music. Often the students dance as well as sing and may emphasize

visual additions such as costuming.

2315 CLASSROOM/GENERAL/EXPLORATORY MUSIC

A class designed to develop the student's ability to make discriminating judgments regarding music through a variety of

musical

activities. The class considers the elements of music as found in many different styles, cultures and periods of music.

Secondary

classes in this category have many titles such as: "Mime and Music," "Today's Music," "Music of Yesterday and Today,"

"Music Survey," "World of Music,"etc. Elementary classes are usually known only as "Music."

2322 MUSICAL THEATER

A class in which students learn vocal music techniques, principles of musical drama and acting techniques. They learn skills

through performing examples of musical theater, including, but not confined to, Broadway shows.
